Martin Jantzen

Martin Jantzen is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Viola da gamba with Paolo Pandolfo in Basel (Switzerland). In 2018 he was a laureate of the Bach-Abel-Competition in Köthen (Germany).

While studying cello in Frankfurt on the Main, he developed an interest for the viola da gamba family of instruments and started with Heidi Gröger as his teacher to discover this new fascinating world. Besides the more commonly used viol-instruments, Martin also performs on seldomly played string-instruments like the Arpeggione to bring back to life the unique sound of such rarities.

Martin was supported in his studies by several scholarships: The society of friends and sponsors of the “HfMDK Frankfurt”, the Kalliope foundation and the SINFONIMA Mannheim, among others. He studied with Prof. Jean-Guihen Queyras, Prof. Elena Cheah, Prof. Jan Ickert and others, joined Masterclasses and worked with contemporary composers like Lee Santana and Helmut Lachenmann.
